Plants Of The Month - January

Sarcococca

Commonly known as sweet box or Christmas box because its lustrous, evergreen foliage resembles its close relative, the common box. It produces highly scented, creamy-white flowers from around mid winter. It's a tough shrub that is tolerant of quite heavy shade and pollution, and makes a good, informal hedge.

Invaluable, low maintenance ground cover, that can be used in just about any location as long as the soil is not waterlogged for any length of time. The cabbage-like leaves provide year-round interest and change colour with the seasons. They do attract snails so it is advisable to monitor the leaves. During the summer the leaves turn a lustrous green with perhaps a light blush of red and yellow, but come the first hard frost, the chances are they will turn to brilliant shades of plum.
