Plants Of The Month - May

Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata 'Ruby Port'

These burgundy flowers are delightful in the early summer garden. They are small enough not to be too gaudy, but colourful enough to catch the eye. Their rich colour is suprisingly easy to work with and it mixes particularly well with other plums, purples and bronze.

One of a handful of plants that are able to flourish in dry shade, it is perfect for underplanting trees and shrubs, or plugging gaps in darker corners. It is a sprawling perennial that will form good-sized clumps in time, Low maintenance, hardy Geraniums come in many colours and enjoy a long flowering season.

Viburnum plicatum 'Mariesii'

A deciduous shrub for the woodland garden or shrub border. A tough and easy to grow shrub, that requires the minimum of maintenance. When they appear, the lacecap-like flowers form in clusters up to 10cm across on top of its branches. This makes it look as if the plant has been dusted with a generous layer of snow hence its common name of 'Japanese snowball bush'.
